Realism Unleashed:
Sonic Choreography

by Alessandro MacKinnon-Botti

Embrace sonic realism through Sonic Choreography: use your body’s movements to create a living auditory canvas that captures the everyday.

  1. Choose a specific sound you wish to convey visually.
  2. Design a visual map (by hand or electronically) that represents your movements. Use arrows, lines, or shapes to symbolise actions associated with your chosen sound.
  3. Use your map as a guide, but also look for moments for possible improvisation, deviating from the map by letting your body flow naturally.
  4. Perform your live sound map alongside a recording of your chosen sound.

Sonic Choreography is an innovative way to express everyday realism. Your visual map becomes a musical score, translating the everyday into a unique auditory performance. For instance, once the idea has been conceived, the choreography may be extended to a dance troupe for a performance.
