The Rollercoaster

by Monim Wains

A highlight of life for all that tried
Everyone older remembered their ride
‘The best time of your life’, they sighed

It looked so good every time I walked by
Everyone getting off with a glint in their eye
A hundred crazy stories that I wanted to try
If only I could, were it not for the sky

On the day that I went
The sky rained and sent
A cloud that refused to relent

But the harness shut tight around me
There was no way for me to be free
The fog was all I could see
Those promises faded from me

All I could do was sit on my own
Watch as those wishes were taken and thrown
For reasons that are still unfair and unknown

So the cloud stayed in the light
Dark grey in my sight
Blocking the sun left and right
I could do nothing but feign delight
‘It’s intense’ I would cite

I wish it was bright
